RE: Diesel Kleen Fuel Treatment.

For ulsd lubricity issues, look at Opti-Lube. It comes in blends for summer & winter. Looks to be the cheapest for the amount of lubricity improvement - better than the well known brands. Its HFFR is 321 at the recommended treatment rate (1 to 1500). Look at their web site for info: www.opti-lube.com. I don't sell it, but I researched a lot of stuff on the net before deciding on it. I didn't want to buy something to put in my tanks with the primary recommendation being: "Its been used by lots of folks for years with no problems."

RE: What or who do you blame for the financial crisis?

I hope everyone watched the hour-long news special on tv last night: "Saving our Economy: What'$ next?" It seemed very objective. It placed much of the cause on the long history of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and explained in great detail with many examples. There was also some finger pointing at our federal government for encouraging risky business. There were several noted economist/professor presentations citing a long history back to the 1929 crash and the mistakes made over the years since then. Very interesting.

RE: Bozeman pass

Since I'm a Montanan born, raised and still, I miss MT all the time I'm not there. I really enjoyed hiking in Glacier Park and playing on Flathead Lake this summer. However, I'm content to live without snow. See you in Key West this winter!!

RE: Pressure pro monitors

I added the remote antenna to my system. Since then, I can monitor the fiver tires from up to 200' away (maybe farther, but haven't tried). My antenna is located under the hitch on the back of my truck where it can "see" all 14 tires. I've had my system several years. I get no interference from it or with it. I concur with buying from Mike and Pat McFall (Escapees) - they are wonderful folks.

RE: Michelin XPS question.

After two thrown treads on the original General tires, I went to Michelin XPS. I've run 10,000 miles in a little over a year since then with no problems. The tires look like new, with no uneven wear. I did up the inflation from Newmar's recommended 65psi to 75-80psi. It was expensive - $1,800 for 9 tires (tandem duals plus spare) mounted and balanced at Costco on special sale. I also installed a Pressure Pro TPMS - money well spent! I can now monitor all 14 tires (truck & fiver) on the road.

RE: Need Generator Help!

Our fiver came with an Onan 6500 propane gen that will easily run everything (2 acs, micro/convect, av system, etc). Most of the time we use a Honda 2000, but it won't run the acs or micro/convect. The Honda is much cheaper to run than the Onan - Honda uses 1 gal gas for 9 hours vs Onan using 9 gal of propane (40# tank) at low power for 9 hours (about $3 vs $30).

RE: can't turn anode rod to remove it!

WD40 or penetrating oil of some sort, then wait until it has time to work through the rust (at least a few hours). My Atwood requires a 1 1'8" socket. As already said, it is a pipe thread (tapered) so will come right out as soon as it breaks loose. Put a little teflon tape on it when reinstalling. Don't over tighten it - just enough so it doesn't leak.

RE: Gas below 3 bucks

Saw gas for $2.98 at 7-11 here in Elizabeth City, NC yesterday. It should keep dropping a lot with the price of crude plummeting.

RE: 50cc motor scooters

We had an Aprilia SR50 scooter for 8 years and dIdn't use it much (700 miles in 8 years and most of it last winter). We decided to get a bigger scooter (in sig below) We like it much better and put 1,000 miles on it in two months in MT (all trips were 30mile or less). We took the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course and got licenses. We dress appropriately when riding. We found a 50cc scooter was too small and limiting for two people in traffic around town and totally unsuitable for highway use. We now use the bicycles around Key West all winter unless we go up the Keys on the highway or go out after dark. We use the scooter for town and highway driving in MT. Our big scooter gets around 60mpg. We keep cars in NC & CO and use the cars instead of the scooter most of the time there.

RE: HAVE TO ASK

We just pulled everything out of the stock market and into CDs for now. We have no home other than the fiver. We have been living off military retirement and social security, so rarely had to touch savings. Our average daily "rent" (utilities and parking space) have been running around $10 for the past several years (boondocking and staying at friends/family a lot).
Unlike the previous posters, I think we are in for a long "drought" (7 years), and the economy will not recover back to where it was. This is an international crisis and many huge companies have collapsed, unlike the S&L crisis or previous problems. We have seen extremely risky fiscal policies cause many of the problems, and many of these will not change readily. We've exported much of our manufacturing to China and other countries, helping to build their economies and hurt our own. We've become increasingly an "its all about me" society, absorbed in IPods, cell phones, computer games, and other personal pleasures. Our huge dependence on foreign fuel doesn't help. I can site many other reasons, but not on this forum. Of course this is just my personal opinion.

RE: Stepping into the RV

Our Newmar Mountain AIre has an electric slide out porch with fold up/down railing. The porch is about 3' X 3' and the steps are 3' wide. Sure makes entry/exit easier!

RE: Onan generator gas to propane conversion info wanted.

I have the same Onan 6.5K generator in the propane version. I can go through two 40# propane tanks in 18 hours of run time, so be sure you also add enough propane capacity to your rig. Since we dry camp a lot, I usually use a Honda 2K instead of the Onan - much cheaper to run. However, the Honda won't run the AC or micro/convection oven. Just some things to consider.

RE: Taxes and License ouch!!

In MT the permanent tag on my fiver was $180. The truck tag was $140 (registered as a motor coach). There is no sales tax in MT. One of the few advantages in living far from the crowd in the mountains of MT.

RE: Auto Transmission Braking in a Diesel

You can add an exhaust brake and torque converter lock up. I had an AST CoPilot in my F550 along with the exhaust brake. It worked very well. The CoPilot also kept the TC locked up most of the time and reduced tranny heating. There are much cheaper ways to lock up the TC than a CoPilot. On the Ford 4R100 tranny (prone to problems) you could connect to one wire and lock up the TC. You just had to remember to unlock around town and especially when stopping. I'm pretty sure you can do something similar with your Dodge.

RE: Why is it always the inner dual???

Since the road usually has a crown in the middle and a shoulder drop off, the inside dual is slightly more prone to failure because it is carrying more weight and gets slightly less air flow for cooling. I've had two tire failures on my fiver (tandem duals) the first was the left rear inside and the second the right rear inside. Both were because they were carrying more weight and were not properly inflated. Since then I changed to Michelin XPS, raised the pressure from 65 to 75+, and installed a Pressure Pro TPMS.

RE: Flying J

We just came from western MT to eastern NC and used Flying J for fuel all the way. SInce we hold 250+ gallons and have a range of well over 2,000 miles, we can pick the cheapest places to get fuel. Since Sep 1, we pay cash at Flying J - no big deal. We haven't noticed any difference in their service or facilities in all the years we've been rving. Wish I could say the same about their fuel prices.

RE: Looking for tire update (Michelin XPS)

I put eight of them on my fiver (plus spare) for $1,800 mounted and balanced at Costco in Missoula, MT. That was last year and around 10,000 miles ago. They are wearing beautifuly. I agree that the sidewalls are very strong - I've "tested" them (unfortunately) with no problems.

RE: Octane Boost Additive

My Piaggio mp3 recommends 90 octane, but runs fine on less. I never use octane boosters, but I do use Opti-Lube in my diesel, primarily to improve the fuel lubricity when using ULSD. I haven't found a mpg or power difference in the mp3 between 87 and 91 octane, although the mpg and power drops as altitude goes up..
As altitude increases the octane requirement goes down. I can use 85 octane at 6,000'+ but need 87-89 around sea level. If I felt I needed higher octane, I would buy higher octane fuel rather than add something.

RE: What 5th wheel hitch do you have and how do you like it?

An ET custom air hitch - 4 huge air bags & 32K Binkley head. Its mounted 3' behind the rear axle on a class 7 truck. I like the hitch, but its not a suitable hitch for a pickup - weighs 800lbs.
